Trevor Noah Sues Hospital After Botched Surgery Left Him With “Permanent, Severe Injuries”

US-based South African comedian, television host and political commentator Trevor Noah has sued a New York City hospital and doctor following a botched surgical operation. The host of “The Daily Show” alleges that he “sustained permanent, severe and grievous injuries” due to the botched surgical operation.

Trevor Noah filed the lawsuit against the New York-based Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), claiming Dr Riley J. Williams III, an orthopaedic surgeon, failed to properly diagnose his illness and condition, failed to refer him to specialists with proper skill and training to treat his illness, and negligently performed exams and surgery.

The media personality’s legal team filed the lawsuit at the Supreme Court in Manhattan, where the hospital is located. The Supreme Court of the State of New York is a trial-level court and not the highest court in the state.

According to the suit, Noah received treatment from HSS and Williams III between August 25, 2020, and December 17, 2020, including a surgery on November 23, 2020.

The suit alleges Noah “sustained severe and painful personal injuries, sustained severe nervous shock, mental anguish, severe emotional distress and great physical pain.”

Noah alleges in the suit that all care he was given at the Hospital for Special Surgery “was performed and rendered in a negligent and careless manner, and constituted professional negligence.”

The hospital has denied the allegations describing them as “meritless.” Part of a statement supplied to CNN by the hospital reads,

“HSS received a complaint filed on behalf of Mr. Trevor Noah.

“We have shared with Mr. Noah’s attorney a detailed rebuttal to the claims, which are meritless.

“Due to HIPAA, we are restricted by law from addressing publicly specific aspects of the treatment of any patient.”

Federal privacy laws prohibit the hospital from addressing specific accusations publicly or aspects of a patient’s care.

“HSS is committed to excellence in the care we provide to each of the more than 150,000 patients we treat each year. This commitment has made HSS the world’s leading academic medical centre specialized in musculoskeletal health, consistently ranked #1 in orthopaedics globally and nationally,” the statement reads

The suit seeks unspecified damages.

Williams III is the medical director and head team orthopaedic surgeon for professional sports teams like the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and the WNBA’s New York Liberty. He is also a team physician for USA Basketball.
